Plough Inn - Southbank

A short while back, we attended a friend's birthday party which was held in the longstanding Plough Inn, situated in Southbank. Despite its long establishment, I had yet to try it out until now. Walking over from the CBD after work provided some relaxing exercise and by the time we got there we were quite hungry indeed. As expected from a gastro pub type venue, it was counter service. Luckily there wasn't a lineup that evening.

To aid our decision making, there was an extremely large menu on the wall next to the counter. There were a large selection of pub style food including share boards, salads and other mains, but there was no doubt that the focus for the Plough Inn is their steak and ribs.

We ordered and grabbed a seat upstairs. Whilst not airconditioned, the elevation allowed for a lot more breeze than we had initially expected.

One friend of ours ordered 1kg of chicken wings, which was on special that evening. The portion was very impressive and he could barely finish half of it. The wings were fried and had a really crispy skin to it, and a moist juicy centre, although it was a little salty.

Another friend ordered the fish and chips, which was the smallest of our meals, but still very large. It came with a citrus salad on the side which was quite unique. Other than that, the fish and chips were both freshly fried and quite tasty.

My third companion ordered the half rack of ribs, which I was lucky enough to steal try some. The ribs were marinated really well and packed with flavour, although a little dry which was a little disappointing. The extra pepper sauce was quite spicy and gave it an extra hit, and the chips were very crunchy. The salad gave it some much needed balance.

That evening, I had the Rib fillet, rare and with pepper sauce, as usual. Whilst being cooked rare, the steak itself was surprisingly chewy. The pepper sauce was also spicy like my companions, and the portion of chips was quite generous. I liked the coleslaw which was surprisingly creamy whilst fresh. I would have really enjoyed the meal if the steak was a little more tender.
